How to Get a Soft and Natural Finish For Your Makeup
While makeup seems to keep getting more and more complicated with countless products and new techniques, one thing that is still coveted by all makeup lovers is a fresh and natural finish. It seems like everyone is using 20-30 products and spending hours to achieve “no-makeup makeup”. In this post (the first of my Let’s Makeup Series!) I’m going to share my best advice and techniques for achieving a fresh, natural face. Keep reading if you want to learn how to save time and still look refreshed and healthy…because cake is for plates, not faces!
Start With a Good Skincare Routine!
One of the things that determines the finish of your makeup is the condition of your skin. Many people pile on foundations and concealers in hopes of hiding their flaws under makeup. However, with a good skincare routine you won’t have very many blemishes to worry about covering up in the first place. I strongly recommend washing and moisturizing your face twice a day with a gentle facial cleanser of your choice. Other great products to improve the look of your skin include scrubs, toners, masks and pore strips. If you commit to a consistent skincare routine your skin will clear up and your makeup will inevitably look better because the surfaces it’s applied to will be healthier. When it comes to creating a natural finish what’s underneath your products truly counts!
Match Your Colors in Natural Light
We’ve all done our makeup in a dark bathroom only to emerge into the light of day to face the shame and horror of a look gone wrong. When it comes to creating a natural finish, natural light is everything! Choose your foundation, concealer, and powder colors wisely and always test them on the various areas of your face in bright, natural light before making them part of your routine. The sun may be harsh, but it certainly doesn’t lie. By examining your makeup in sunlight you’re sure to be able to tell when a foundation is making you look like an orange or when power is totally washing you out!
Use a Light Hand
This tip is for all of my heavy-handed girls – myself included! Often times people struggle to create a natural finish because they are unknowingly using too much product and applying it with too much force. The next time you sit down to get glammed up pay careful attention to the amount of product you’re using. Can you cut the amount of foundation you use in half? Do you need to lay off the blush? Tune into your own actions and recognize any bad habits you have that could be contributing to an unnatural finish! On top of that, try using light feathery strokes to apply products – no more menacing your poor face with that beauty blender!
Use Mineral Based Products
I love mineral based products because they seem a lot lighter and airier than a lot of the makeup on the market. Plus a lot of them have an added shimmer that gives the perfect natural glow without being overpowering. Try shopping around for mineral powders, blushes and eyeshadows if you want to incorporate some more natural products into your beauty arsenal!
Use Liquid Based Products!
If you want to create a natural look., liquid based products are your very best friend. These items are amazing because they offer sheer coverage while being incredibly buildable. You can start soft and amp up your look to create the natural finish you desire. One of my favorite liquid products is benetint, Benefit Cosmetic’s original lip and cheek stain. This stuff is nothing short of magic! It looks stellar on all skin tones and creates perfectly flushed cheeks and lips!
Enhance Your Natural Features
It works in your favor to play up your naturally beautiful features. This way you’re building on something that’s already great instead of going out of your way to build something that just isn’t there. Do you have a great nose, lush lips or naturally full brows? If so focus your time and attention on these features. Since these things already stand out you’ll look really pretty and fresh faced if you show them a little extra love! I personally have really long lashes but barely-there brows (I know – exposed) so I love my lash curler and mascara and use minimal makeup application on my brows. It’s not to say that I don’t fill them in because I totally do – every day! It’s just that I make them look natural while adding drama to my lashes! Find what works for you and showcase your best features, because you are naturally beautiful!
I hope this post helped those of you struggling to create the perfect “no-makeup” makeup look. Let me know your best tips and products for creating a pretty, natural look in the comments, I’m always looking for recommendations!
